Dear Coronavirus,

Readers: this is a break from my usual writings on finances and life. Like you, my days have been upended. And to meet the demand, I’ve pivoted my business so that I can provide you with immediate assistance in creating an emergency financial plan. Wishing you good health during these troubling times.

Dear Coronavirus,

You came into this world in a whirlwind, spreading devastation wherever you visit. You’re in my neighborhood. You’ve grounded our dreams. You’ve made national headlines. You are the talk of the town. Mission accomplished.

Coronavirus, you’ve unearthed some ugly human traits. I’ll give you that. We’ve become even more xenophobic – we’ve even become suspicious of out-of-state license plates. The gun shops have made a fortune off of your scare tactics. Heck, there’s even talk about sacrificing our older and more vulnerable citizens – all to get the economy running again. And if I choose to dwell on those outcomes, you will have conquered my spirit as well.

But you know what? I’m not giving into your low-ball tactics. I think you’ve underestimated the resilience, resourcefulness, and compassion that remains. Just the other day my eyes teared up as the teacher caravan came through my neighborhood, waving and honking at their gleeful students. We adapt. That’s what we do. And I have to believe that more of us care about our fellow humans than don’t. Human life is not expendable.

Coronavirus, we all know your strength. But your kryptonite is easily accessible. Physical distancing. Hand-washing. And learning the facts. You are winning this round, but this is the championship, and we’ll eventually defeat you. We’ve got you figured out now.

I’m going to give you a secret: The only way you can truly win this war is by destroying our hope (and maybe our sensibilities). But humans have a long history of chasing rainbows. Even as our hearts break, we rise to the call. We find cures. We invent new ways to thwart you. We believe we will rise again. And we will!

So we’re breaking up with you, Coronavirus. You may hide around the corner and stalk us a bit, but you’ll soon get bored and slither away. As for me, I’ll take pleasure in glorious sunrises, listen to the tree frogs sing at night, and offer a smile to those I meet. Goodbye forever!
